How Is EQUIP-IN Working With Local Authorities

EQUIP-IN aims to identify how the pathway for the provision of bathing equipment and adaptions for older adults could be more effective. We cannot do with without the help of local authorities.

EQUIP-IN follows on from the successful BATH-OUT projects led by Dr Phillip Whitehead. We’re primarily evaluating the pathway from when an older adult with difficultly bathing contacts their local authority until their case is closed. With this, we’ll be determining the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of equipment and adaptations.

Our study plan involves five work packages to help us to:

  • better understand how usable the equipment and adaptations are
  • find out how they help older adults maintain independence
  • establish if they reduce the need for other health and social care services
  • explore the impact of waiting times on outcomes
  • recommend how to simplify the pathway and reduce differences between services

We want to map the key pathways, and the variations that exist between services, across England. It’s important to us that we’re able to capture this information from a range of urban and rural geographies and population structures.

Over the next five years we’ll be completing:

  • interviews
  • a mapping survey
  • a cohort study
  • workshops
  • observations
